Do the work.

Shortcuts are seductive, but every one is a debt you’ll pay back with interest. The real waste isn’t time spent on care—it’s the time lost to rework, patch jobs, and regret when you cut corners. At Segern we sweat the details up front: explicit ownership, crystal-clear definitions of done, precision in execution, and an iron refusal to ship what isn’t right.

How we do it:

  • Break it down. Slice projects into narrowly scoped, actionable work items.
  • Name the steward. Each work item has one—and only one—owner. No shared accountability.
  • Define “done.” State success in one to two sentences, list required artifacts, and name who signs off.
  • Design out shortcuts. Hold a quick “pre-mortem” to surface tempting corners to cut and remove them before work begins.
  • Build quality in. Peer review is a habit, not an afterthought. Quality checkpoints are embedded, not appended.

Practice:

  • For every work item clearly define, Owner: ___, Success looks like: ___, Done when: ___
  • Review open work items weekly for clarity and closure.
  • Maintain a “one-and-done” checklist per project—no band-aids, no “we’ll fix it later.”
  • When urgency pressures arise, ask “What problem are we actually solving?”, “Is the rush real or noise?”

Doing it right isn’t perfectionism—it’s respect. Respect for the work, the user, and the future. We don’t build for today’s praise; we build for tomorrow’s legacy.
